Senior Portrait Services

In addition to design and commercial photographic services, I offer portrait services, with a focus on photographing seniors. My father is the administrator of an extended care facility in South Bend, Indiana, so I grew up around the elderly in a family whose collective mission is their assistance and care. I have always gotten along famously with folks many generations older than myself, and that connection brings life to my portraits.

I charge nothing to the senior living facility itself, and have no cumbersome equipment to set up. I shoot outside, usually in garden areas, at the time of day when the light is most flattering for pictures. Each portrait takes but a few seconds; with the help of a volunteer or two, I can easily make fifty portraits in an hour. Resident families and staff are all welcome; these shoots are conducted on a "come-one, come-all" basis.

Portrait days are great from an activities standpoint: residents typically get their hair and makeup done prior to the shoot, wear their best clothes, and invite their families to pose with them. To those whose freedom of movement may be restricted and their families, this is a rare opportunity to have a professional portrait made, because I come to them! I am saddened to see anniversary and obituary announcements in the newspaper with snapshot photos attached. Often, families don't have professional photographs of their loved ones beyond the age of 60.

My portraits can be viewed on my laptop immediately after they're taken, and individuals may order their prints then. Alternately, everyone receives a complimentary wallet-sized proof of their portrait in the mail approximately ten business days after the shoot, and they may also order upon seeing it. No one is obligated to make a purchase.

A 4x6" print costs $5, a 5x7" print costs $7.50, and an 8x10" print costs $10, and they are available black and white or color. Prints from more accessible printers (e.g. Walgreen's, Costco, CVS, and grocery stores) are made on cheap paper with cheap ink and thusly begin to fade after 10-15 years. My prints are made on professional-grade film paper that will resist fade for 150+ years. This way, they stay in the family for generations.
